Health Benefits of Beer

 In Blog

While we’ve all heard about the benefits of wine and red wine in particular and how good it is for your health, but we haven’t heard much about the benefits of beer.

Red wine is good for the heart but did you know that beer is also good for you…when consumed in moderation.

Although beer is thousands of years old, research has just emerged that shows the vast health benefits of drink. Obviously like all other alcoholic drinks it becomes bad for your health when consumed in excess.

Below is a list of benefits which should give you an excuse to pick up a cold one every now and then,

  • Improves Blood Pressure: According to research into the health benefits of beer, women that consume a beer a day are less likely to suffer from high blood pressure that those who didn’t. Women who consumed wine and spirits only were also more likely to suffer from high blood pressure than beer drinking women. Remember though that moderation is the key because drinking too much of any alcoholic beverage can do the exact opposite, and actually raise your blood pressure.
  • Improves Heart Health: Just like wine, beer can be good for your heart’s health. According to research beer can reduce homocysteine levels in the blood. Homocysteine is an amino acid that can build up in the blood stream, high levels of which are associated with an increased risk of heart disease.  Research has also shown that alcohol content in beer can help boost your HDL (good cholesterol.
  • Reduces your Risk of Kidney Stones: Research suggests that people who are prone to developing kidney stones, should drink beer in moderation. Beer drinkers showed the lowest risk of developing kidney stones as compared to non-beer drinkers (non-alcohol drinkers and people who drink wine and spirits). It is assumed that this is because of the high water in beer.
  • Greater Bone Strength: Data published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition from research which looked in to the effects of alcohol consumption and bone mineral density shows that beer drinkers had better bone strength.  Both male and female regular, moderate beer drinkers showed significantly higher bone mineral densities than those who drank other kinds of alcohol.

Also remember that consumed in excess beer can be bad for your health and cause you to put on excess weight, especially in the abdominal area, giving rise to what is commonly called a “beer belly”.

As with anything that’s good for you, beer should always be consumed in moderation and responsibly. If you are going to drink, don’t drive and don’t binge drink or the health benefits will not apply and you will in fact do your health more harm than good. The rule of thumb is generally one or two beers maximum a day.
